Richard Grainger 1779 -1861 Newcastle
« on: Wednesday 25 January 12 03:39 GMT (UK) »
My family tree includes a Grainger and I have always been told that we were related to the Graingers of Newcastle.  While doing my own tree research I thought that I would see if there is any fact to this story.  However all the sons from Richard Grainger and his marriage to Rachel Arundale (not found their marriage either), and he had a few, none seem to have had children; He had 13 children in all, 6 son and 7 daughters.
Thomas C Grainger 1822 -1884
Richard John Grainger  1830 - 1865
Joseph Arundale Grainger 1831 - 1872, M Jane Mather 16 Jul 1868 in Newcastle.
George F S Grainger  1835 - ?

Unable to find the other 2 sons but have located all 7 girls ( I have their names if required, along with most spouses).

Richard (see even my name matches)

George Forster Smith Grainger died in Australia 1874, as per Ancestry records.  Wonder if was a "deportee" to botany Bay.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to track this one?

In 1871 Joseph A is with one of the married sisters. He is married, but Jane is not there.
Have you located Jane to see where she is, and if there are children?
What are the other sons names?

When did Richard Grainger (and Rachel) die? Have you looked for a Will? They seem a reasonably well off family by the number of servants in 1871 at the married sisters house!
A will might help you pinpoint all the children and what happened to them.

1841 is unclear.
Cant locate Richard (and Rachel if alive) and older children

Younger children are at Front Street, HO107 826 7

Sarah 12
Adelaide 7
Juliet 6
George 5
Maria 4
unclear as to who head of house is - but no Grainger parents there.

What are the names of the other boys - you say there are 2 more? What is your source - ie how do you know they exist?

Hi,
Number of children obtained from this web site (realize it in not a definitive source but it is the only one I have found).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Grainger

Thanks I have the Ancestry records of the Richard Granger will, the John Arundale will, the Richard John Graingers will, the Thomas Charles Grainger and now the George FS Grainger one. The only one with a record of marriage is John Arundale but his marriage ended in court when he stole his wife's endowment (Googled him to find this one).  Can find no children from any of the males so tracking any connection to my tree is problematic to say the least.
I wondered if the emigration of George might have a story to it so I was looking for information sources on the Botany Bay deportees.
Yes a very rich family, Richard Grainger built much of what is now the downtown core of the city of Newcastle Upon tyne.  He however died almost broke after a bad business investment. His wife Rachel died early  so servants raise most of the children.

Hi,
As for Jane Davidson Grainger (nee Mather), Joseph's wife, she either remarried or died but as yet I have found no further record of her (still looking).  She came from a wealthy family, father Charles Thomas Nater Mather ..(named in the court case).  As Joseph died the next year, after the case, tracking any children is again an issue.
