Phillimore Look-Up Please
« on: Wednesday 25 January 12 12:45 GMT (UK) »
The Phillimore transcripts for Derbyshire, parish of Alfreton (believe it is Volume 15).  Have interest in look-ups for marriage of William TAGG marriage date would be about 1831 +/- 2 years.  Also another William Tagg marriage in Alfreton in 1800-1812.

Thank you.

Hi,

There are no William Tagg marriages in Phillimore Transcripts for Alfreton.

If you have found either of the Williams you are looking for on a census with a wife, it is more than
likely that the marriage took place in the parish where the wife was living.

If you have names for wives, even if only the Christian names, then if you post the details I know
lots of people will try to find the marriages for you.

Hi,

You may well have found this already, but there are a number of marriages involving men called William TAGG on the familysearch website, including one to Ann WILLIAMSON in Duffield on 18 March 1831.

There's also a marriage to a Mary HILL in Tibshelf in 1804.

There are also marriages in Nottinghamshire within your time frame, and marriages in Chesterfield and Shirland just outside your dates.

Thank you spendlove and redshank for writing.  I believe my William Tagg (born 1810) married Ann Williamson who was born West Hallam.  This marriage I did find at the fasmilysearch website.  They were married at Duffield in 1831, they had at least one child born Alfreton but was baptised Duffield in 1833.  To be sure I had the correct couple, I wanted to see if there were any other William's who married Ann's in or near Alfreton in that time frame, was also interested to find names of parents for William 1810.  All I know for sure right now is that William (1810 Alfreton) did marry someone named Ann (born about 1810 West Hallam) according to the 1851 census.  That same census shows the son, William (1833) in the household.

So far there are two possibles for parents of William 1810, I believe they are:  James Tagg and Mary Fletcher married 1807 at Alfreton OR John Tagg and Ann Alfree married 1798 Alfreton.  Other possibles may be out there though am not aware of them.  Both of these couples were found in Pallot's Marriage Index as I did not have access to Alfreton Phillimore's and was curious if it might show others that I should be considering.

After making the original post I ordered 3 films from LDS to look at the parish registers of both Alfreton and Duffield.  Wanted to see if Phillimore's had any further marriages so that I could look them up as well and knowing the years of any additional possibilities would have helped.

Thanks for the help though am surprised the 2 marriages from Alfreton that were in the Pallot's index were not in the Phillimores.  Hopefully more details will be found out once the film arrives.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Do you know this site:

http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/Registers/index.html

It has the Alfreton marriages from 1706-1837

Cheers,
John

Thank you John:

I had seen the site a few days ago and had trouble with it...today is working fine.  Am going through it now.

Hopefully, when the films arrive, the marriage for William Tagg will confirm his and his wife's parents names.  Should then be able to find the appropriate births from the other two films ordered, maybe find some siblings too.

Thanks again,
Julie

Hi Julie,

I think you may be disappointed with the parents' names for a marriage in 1831 - it was only when general registration came in during 1837 that churches were required to record the name of the father in the register. You should get the witnesses, whether they were married previously and possibly his occupation, but not the father, I'm afraid.

Cheers,
John

Thanks for the heads up, John.  I wasn't sure if parents names would be on the marriage but ordered the film in case.  Also ordered films for the births so as long as there weren't too many boys with the same first and last names born about the same time, hopefully, I will find the parents names.  Time will tell, just waiting for the films to arrive.

Thanks for your help!
