Fred Strecker born Nottingham 1906
« on: Wednesday 25 January 12 14:50 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone find him on the 1911 census, please ? He later lived in St Ann's & became a butcher...only know that he
was born in 1906 in Nottingham. I'm trying to find out where his parents were born & what his father did.

Thanks

My father Haydn Corpe (known as Chris) worked with Fred Strecker's sister Olive. She and my father ran a Pork Butchers business in St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham in the 1950's and 60's. Olive used to mention Fred and his Speedway expolits. Happy days. I used to eat Pork Crackling 18" long ! Garry

Hi, I've only just seen this post and may be able to help. My father, who was born in 1908, told me that the Streckers changed the spelling of their surname at the outbreak of WW1 in 1914, so as to try and avoid anti-German activity. It was originally Streicher. Fred went from being a motorcycle speedway ("Dirt-Track") rider, to driving stock cars at the old White City Stadium down Trent Lane, Colwick, Nottm..

After many years of research I can find almost no instance of The Streckers having changing their surname. Why would they? If you wanted to hide your German roots you would change your name to Smith or Jones etc. not Strecker.

Fred, 1906 was born as Strecker, and his father had married as Strecker.  However his parents altered their first names:

Marriages March quarter 1903
Leiseti Giebler    Nottingham    7b   338
Friedrich   Strecker     Nottingham    7b   338

In 1911 they are Fred and Lizzie both from Germany.

Interesting - of their 3 children in 1911 Doris and Charles have mmn Giebler, whilst Fred's is Kepler.

However, I think the comment (by F M) has some validity - if you want to alter your surname but maintain some link to it, then you would not change to Smith or Jones.
