3/5 A&SH Greenock
« on: Thursday 26 January 12 07:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

can any experts on WW1 history provide any further background to this picture?

As you can see the board says Cooks, 3/5 A&SH, Greenock

was this a regular/TA/Volunteer unit?

thanks

Surely A&SH = Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders?

So, looking at www.theargylls.co.uk

1915
3/5th (Renfrewshire) Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) T.F. -
April formed at Greenock.
Summer may have been at Bridge of Earn.
Autumn moved to Ripon.

1916
3/5th (Renfrewshire) Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) T.F. - Ripon:
8 April became 5th (Reserve) Battalion.

No mention of the battalion in 1914 (obviously!).
However, the 1/5th were based at the Drill Hall, Finnart Street, Greenock - maybe the 3/5th took over there?
