I think it looks like William Woodhouse was illegitimate. Not unusual in the Staffordshire moorlands !
Despite checking all the internet resources, I cannot find his mother's name.
On the census for 1851, he gives Onecote as his place of birth. I must make the effort to visit Staffs record office and get out of the habit of relying too much on the computer. Trouble is, as one gets older, it takes more effort to 'gad about' the country like I used to before family history on- line was invented. It was much more fun though.
My gr grandparents, John Gould and Mary Wood were both residing in Blackbrook (Elkstone) when they married in 1876. His parents were John Gould and Mary Stubbs - married 1848 - and his grandfather was Thomas Gould.
I notice you have the name Gilman in your list of interests. I used to know some Gilmans in Biggin by Hartington and I think there was a Gilman family in Youlgrave. Any connection with those two villages ?
Happy New Year

The son of George Finney on the gravestone we started with,  ::), William, married Elizabeth Gilman 1849 at Alstonefield. My Gilmans are then mostly around Sheen and Alstonefield - they farmed at 'The Low' Alstonefield.

Still can't see where the Goulds fit. Mine are quite a long way back - first one I have is Elizabeth marrying Joseph Lomas 1730 at Alstonefield, born 1701 of John Gould and Ann (?possibly). This John had properties at both Lower and Upper Elkstone - lots of great sounding names given in his will of 1748 - 'Pinfold', 'Hob HAys', 'Marsh Croft', 'The wild piece', 'The PAddocks', 'The Rue Stitch', Elstone Hill, and 'Broomy Acre'.  ;) A man of some substance.

I also have a Burnett family who at one time lived at Onecot Hall......... - two of them married Gould girls............

Have a Happy New Year and good hunting! 8)

Hi,
l have a few notes about the history of Sheen ,written in 1984 [by the vicar, I think.] Goulds and Gilman are mentioned . You may find some of the info quite interesting, but I would like to send it to you in a pm as there is quite a lot - probably to much to put on this page. Are you Ok with that? This is my second attempt at sending this reply. The first one disappeared off my screen, never to be seen again !

Hello, I'm interested in finding out more information on the Gilman's of Alstonefield and Sheen. Any information would be appreciated.
