Marshalls' of Grimsby, Lincolnshire
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 00:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I am researching my husband's paternal great grandfather. His name was Samuel Marshall, b 1880 in Grimsby. He married Mary Alderson Middleton in 1889. Samuel was working aboard the HMT Ampulla in 1918 and I cannot find a trace of him since. they had several children together: James Samuel (1901-1903), Louisa (1902), Elsie (1904), Lucy May (1905) Samuel (1906) Leonard (1907) and William (1908). Samuel, Leonard and William were all put into the care of barnardo's in 1918 and from what I can gather, the older children were kept with family in Lincolnshire. I am having a lot of trouble finding anything about Samuel (father) what with the frequency the name Marshall pops up for the area. I am in Australia and so getting to local records is pretty difficlu if they are not on the internet. any help of info would be greatly apprecaited!!

I know of no such place in Lincs ... 1881 census says somewhere in Cambridgeshire.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

I realise that :)  I thought it was a red herring that should be seen off at the first opportunity.

As there was 11 years between him and Louisa in 1891 and only 4 in 1881, finding him in earlier days could be a wee bit tricky!

1901 has aged 55, born Dereham Norfolk!  :o

thanks for the reply Trish, the three children (Edith, Olive and John J) WERE part of the family - but the man I am after was not the father. their father was a soldier by the name of John Batty, but the mother was the same. I have no idea who the other kids were!!

thanks KGarrad and Geoff-E,  I suppose I was really just rambling in my original post - but as I am brand new to this format, please excuse me!  ;) What I am mostly after is any information (espec from long lost relatives!) about Samuel b. 1880 AFTER 1918. We don't know what ever happened to him and whether he had any contact with any of his children after this date. I am definitely going to keep plugging away at this mystery!

This is Samuel's marriage isn't?

St. Andrew's Grimsby   25/12/1899   MARSHALL   SAMUEL   19   a   labourer of    21 Holme St, Grimsby son of    JOHN   labourer   MIDDLETON    MARY ALDERSON   19      --   same address daughter of    WILLIAM LEAK Alderson,    dock labourer witnessed by    JOHN SUTHERLAND   M. A. SUTHERLAND

This is the marriage of his daughter, Lucy May, in 1930, which shows that by then Samuel, a fisherman was dead.

St. John's Cleethorpes Road   13/03/30   LOWLE   John William   26   a   fisherman    living at 103 Thorold St, Grimsby son of    John William Lowle a    fisherman   MARSHALL   Lucy May   23      --   same address daughter of   Samuel Marshall a    deceased fisherman, witnessed by    P. H. GRIMBLE   J. BULLOCK

Tom

I have no connection with the family, the marriage info is from a CD of Grimsby & Cleethorpes Marriages compiled from original marriage records by Denise Light available from her on her website.
