Griffiths of Cilgerran
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 19:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone have any info on my 3 x grt grandparents JOHN and ESTHER GRIFFITHS, of Cilgerran? ESTHER was born about 1805 in Cilgerran where she died on 31 Dec 1890. I have info on their children and marriage (1830) but cannot find their baptism records. John was born about 1805/8 in Cilgerran.

John worked away from home (he is absent from their household in Cilgerran in the 1841 and 1851 censuses). At this time Esther and her children were living with Hannah Davies, b 1776/80. She may have been Esther's mother. A William Davies was a witness at their wedding.

Any help would be gratefully received,

Alison

I have info on their children and marriage (1830) but cannot find their baptism records.

Following the mrge of John Griffiths to Esther Davies at Cilgerran 15 June 1830 in the established church according to the law of the land pre Sept 1837, I note the children John (circa 1827), David (circa 1830) Hannah (circa 1835) and Thomas (circa 1838) along with unrelated person but living in same location Mary Davies (circa 1829).
I have found a baptism for a David Griffiths in 1830, and the Familyhistory website appears to support my findings with a baptism of 26 Sept 1830 to John & Esther Griffiths at Cilgerran.
Of all the other children including Mary Davies, I can confirm none of them where baptised in the established church at Cilgerran.

Thank you so much for your help with the Griffiths. Any ideas on how to discover more about Esther's and John's origins? I've been using familysearch for some of my English ancestors but the IGI doesn't seem too great on Welsh records and I haven't been able to find any parish records online so far. And I live a long way from Wales...

Whilst at the R.O. today I searched for the following ;
Cilgerran baptism of Esther Davies 1800 to 1810 and John Griffiths 1800 to 1810.
Cilgerran parish registers for the period 1796 to 1806 have been lost so the only available to search was 1806 to 1810 ~ Nil found.
You could try NLoW to see if B.T.'s survive for 1800 to 1806 in the hope the baptisms are found there.
I searched Cilgerran for a mrge of an Unknown Griffiths to a Hannah Unknown between 1795 and 1810 I'm afraid nil found, however I did run out of time before I could use another idea to find the mrge, so that must wait till another visit.

Sorry nothing more positive

Thank you so much for trying to find out about Esther and john. It 's very good of you to take the time. Just my luck that the records are missing. I suppose it's unlikely that either was baptised elsewhere? I wonder if Hannah Davies was Esther's mother or her aunt?

Best wishes,

Alison

Hello,

I am a direct descendant of Ester Griffiths nee Bateman who was born in 1799 in Cilgerran.

I also have the family bible (in welsh) from Ester!

Ester married John Griffiths b 1807

Hannah Davies appears born 1852 but I have not researched her yet!
