Dugald McKinnon and siblings
« on: Friday 03 February 12 09:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.  I am trying to find if anything is known of my ggrandfather Alexander McKinnon's siblings marriages and or children or anything at all please..  Their parents were Lachlan and Flora McKinnon and they were all born in Tobermory.  Dugald (born 1830 married Christina Cameron but I do not know if there were children.  The other children are:
Hugh b 1816
Anne 1817
Hector 1823
Donald 1824
Janet (Jessie) 1826
William 1835.
I only know of Dugalds death in 1907 and none of the others.  Could I please have a lookup of them to see what happened to them.  Alexander migrated here to Australia in 1861.  Thank you very much if anyone can help....cheers..

I don't know if it is relevant but I am looking for a Donald McKinnon who married Margaret Rankin in 1833 in Glasgow. They were living in Ledaig, Tobermory in 1841 (he work on the ferries to the Broomielaw and was absent), and their first daughter Catherine was baptised in Glasgow in 1836 with Alexander and Dugald McKinnon as witnesses. They also had a daughter Jessie.

The dates are different but perhaps a generation apart.

Iain

Lachlan and Flory [nee McInnes] McKinnon are the parents.  Do you have all the dates of birth?

hello and thanks fifer1947 and iain hedley.   I do not have the birthdates of the other children nor know who Lachlan's parents were. I know he was a pilot.  There was a story in the family about the McKinnons (Alexander took the a out from mac) and Bonnie Prince Charlie that my father spoke of.     I have not been able to find out much about them but would love to know anything and I  know the lineage from Alexander and some of his life here in Australia if anyone would like it. Cheers

It's well worth asking for help from the site admin on that link and also giving them what info you have on the family.

My own McKinnon family were from Bunessan and once I'd completed what I could find out I passed it all over to the site which ensures others can find the links easily.

Good luck!

We also had the Bonnie Prince Charlie story, also that the Mckinnons were given the secret recipe for Drambuie, and that they were off scavanging for food and missed Cullodon. My Duncan McKinnon was a Tailor and married to Catherine MacGregor. They were living in Ledaig in 1841. Beyond that, they are a mystery to me.

So this is the family in 1841?

Piece: SCT1841/549 Place: Tobermory -Argyllshire Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Tobermory Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 18 Page: 4
Address: Ledag

MCKINNON    Lachlan  M    50    Merchant Seaman Argyllshire

MCKINNON    William   M    6               Argyllshire
MCKINNON    Alexander M  4               Argyllshire

Which tends to agree with the site I gave you.
Lachlan b abt 1792 m Flory [Flora] McInnes 4 Apr 1815 now that marriage should be in the OPR at Scotland's People.
Hugh    (bap) 7 Mar 1816    -
Anne    (bap) 28 Oct 1817    -
Hector    (bir) abt 1823    -
Donald    (bap) 2 Dec 1824    -
Janet    (bap) 14 May 1826    -
Dugald    (bir) 1830    -
Charles    (bir) abt 1833    -
William    (bir) abt 1835    -
Alexander    (bir) abt 1839    -

Hector bn to Flory and Lachlan is stated to have been born abt 1823, Kilmore, Isle of Mull, Argyllshire, Scotland.  But there is another listed bn abt 1823 Island of Coll married to Catherine McKinnon and has 3 children.  It is perfectly possible that the family moved about around the islands for Lachlan's job as a pilot.  Have you checked for dates of death for both parents and the children on SP?

ETA The marriage for Flory and Lachlan shows on Familysearch as in Kilninian And Kilmore,Argyll,Scotland  which is also Isle of Mull.  The marriage is correct and on Scotland's People

Thank you very much iainhedley and fifer1947 , its great to have the names and dates of other children, many of the names were carried on here.   I have not looked on Scotland's People as I don't know how to use it ( but should learn).....would the marriage certificate or record have their parents on it?  I know Lachlan was a pilot as it is stated on my ggrandparents wedding cert here as father's occupation.  There is also  a gap of births between 1817 and 1823 so he may have been elsewhere for work.  Not sure where to go from here....
