Hi Winterbloom, thats exactly the point i'm making, my dad cleared out my granddads house, (his father-in-law) without telling any of us and everything was lost except for 4 postcards from granddads brother which were sent from india during the first world war, i wouln't part with those for all the tea in china

oh griff that is really sad, and even if it comes up for sale, you'll never know.  I hate those programmes and can't decide how I feel about the inheritance chasers either....

yes hugatree i dont like the inheritance chasers either, used to have one in the family who would hang around the older generation as they got to a certain age, she inherited quite a lot over the years

HI Sloe Gin, I agree with you that its up to the person what to do with family items but people say that no-one in the family wants them,

Sometimes they don't ask  >:(  recently I bought an item at auction in these circumstances.  By the time the auctioneer's commission and other charges were deducted, the vendor received much less than we would have offered in cash  :D

It was lucky that somebody noticed the item in the catalogue and told us.

I'm from the "dont ask" side sloe gin as i wasn't interested at the time but i certainly would ask now, in fact i've asked certain family members if they could leave me a personal item when the day comes, even something like letters that i can put in their file for future generations,

I meant it's the person who's getting rid of stuff that didn't ask if anyone wants it.

oh i misunderstood you sorry  ::) yes thats true.
some years ago when my welsh granddad died (I was about 11) I remember my uncles arguing over what they were going to take from his house, I never wanted to go back there again and never did.
the uncles are now in their 80's and still arguing  :(
