« on: Monday 06 February 12 12:57 GMT (UK) »
I have found this medal amongst my great grandfathers belongings, I think its from the South African War (Boer ??)and is about an inch in size, but I can find no referance to it, can anyone help. Hopefully the image will come out at a reasonable size
Thanks Westy

Certainly some sort of Boer War connection, but don't know what exactly or even if British.
That's President Kruger of the Transvaal I would say. The lion....well there's a lion in the coat of arms of Transvaal. But that's reaching a bit.  ???
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

I think you probably need to find a specialist South African (Boer) Forum?

But I don't know of one myself - sorry!

My expertise ended with translating the Afrikaans, which is (of course) very close to Dutch.

Volharding is written in a different hand. It does mean perseverance but it can also be a surname. This leaves Dapper wegens vermond – “Brave because of being wounded” I would suggest. I would try the British Medal Forum. They have a few SA members. They could also tell you if it would have been worn openly as a watch fob, or worn at home on special occasions.

Meyer was a Boer general at the first battle – Talana. But it is a common surname.
