If that's from the 1841 census, then there will be no indication of relationship.

The 1841 census simply recorded name, age, sex, occupation, and whether born in county or Scotland or Ireland or Foreign.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Im not sure how to post here but James Gibbs was my 2nd great grandfather who married Elizabeth Ereaut in St Helier in 1833 and emigrated to South Australia. He was born around 1809 - supposedly in Poplar London but I have yet to find confirmation of this. 4 daughters survived (Isabella died as an infant) and died in South Australia

Hi

In the last 7 years (wow) that I first looked at things, records available have moved on.

I can see that on James Gibbs marriage he says he was from Stonehouse. Now, Stone House (two words) is a district of Exeter and there is a Parish record showing a baptism for a James Gibbs in 1811. Remember 1841 census ages are rounded to the nearest 10 years.

Where do you get the feeling he was born at Poplar?

Hello - thanks for the information re James's baptism. I had seen that before but assumed that the parents had moved to Devon after James was born. I have his granddaughters birthday book which has an entry on the first page about grandpapa being born in Poplar London in 1809, then moving to Devon  for 12 years, 25 years in Jersey and 3 years in Southboro Kent. He arrived in SA in 1851.

If anyone is keen I could send you  information (the photo I have is slightly too large to post here) - . James and his wife were very religious and were involved in a private school here in Adelaide and also with the Holy Trinity Church in Adelaide. He composed various pieces of music - one of which was performed when a member of royalty visited Adelaide. There are newspaper articles about this - searchable via "Trove" an excellent online source of digitised newspapers in Australia

Does the book say who James's parents were. The ones I found are George and Mary.
