Mary McDonald, late Daly, formerly Douthitt
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 18:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this query.  I have a Johanna McDonald born 4th March 1868 at 13 Barretts Court, Marylebone.  Her father is John MacDonald, Stone Mason and her mother is Mary MacDonald, late Daly, Formerly Douthitt.  I'm not sure if this means she was born as Daly or Douthitt.

I have found the family on the 1871 census, which shows the following:-

John McDonald - Head - Mar - 52 - Mason (Stone) - born Middlesex, Marylebone
Mary Ann McDonald - Wife - Mar - 45 - Laundress - born Ireland, Dublin
Mary A D??? (pos daughter) McDonald - dau - Un - 17 - ??? - born Ireland, Limerick
Thomas McDonald - son - 13 - Errand Boy - born Middlesex, St Georges
Johanna McDonald - dau - 3 - born Middlesex Marylebone

The family were living at No. 12 Barratts Court.

I am unable to find any of the family before this, I cannot find a marriage between John and Mary or any trace of them on the 1861 census.

Johanna went on to marry William Collins in 1886.

I would be very grateful for any ideas  :)

Hi
I believe this means she was born Douthitt and then married a Daly. I have one of mine with a similar comment on a birth cert.

Thanks Jacqui, that's what I think is most likely, but I still can't find any further information.  It is possible that she went from being a Douthitt to a Daly in Ireland.

I'll keep looking and hopefully something will fall into place!

Thanks again

Monique

Hi Monique,

Yes I've tried everything I can think of, but can't find them anywhere. One tip, as well as looking under MacDonald it can be worth trying Donald. I also have McDonalds in my tree and sometimes the transcribers see the Mc as a middle name.
Mind you hasn't worked this time  :(

Most frustrating, good luck

Have you noticed a mother and son at the same address in 1871 with the name 'Daley'? Mother is on the previous page.

Jenifer,

No, I don't think I spotted that, thank you, I will look into the possible lead today.

I don't suppose you noted the name, age and place of birth of the mother did you? My membership to Ancestry has expired and I wont be renewing until the end of the month, I have bought some credits, but only have 2 left! (hope that's not too cheeky to ask)!

Thanks again  :)
