Hi there

can anyone help me decipher what the fathers and groom profession is for the first marriage on the top left?
It wont let me save it to computer and then chop off the section i want people to look at so the only option i have is to post the link and hope people who have ancestry accounts can help.

Its the Henry Carter and Catherine Mary Ellis marriage.

Henry - Engr (Engineer)
James - Leather Draper

(William Ellis's is a bit more difficult - Foreman of the ........................)

I'd say the Fathers profession was Leather Draper? does that tie in with census entries?

The Groom is trickier. Any clues from census returns? My first feeling was Engine but I can't find any 'E's to give that any vailidity- its just what my eyes first saw.

I read James as  Leather Dresser   (old fashioned double "s")    

Have you looked for Henry and James on other records (birth/census) to check their occupations?

James Carter has been an agricultural labourer in previous census's. I wasnt sure if that was common to go from that to a leather draper.

Henry Carter was a dyers assistant in previous census and went on to own his own cleaning business.  ( i thought it said dyer but wanted to check i was right and not lead people)

William Ellis is listed in 1881 as a labourer general and a confectioner in 1891 so im totally confused with how he seems to flit between professions

That's why I was concerned about the Draper part as there were more labourers than shop type people around.

The William one - looks a bit like foreman of the vestry of something like Cam (berwell), though I'm happier with the Cam than I am with the rest of the word. I've posted my thoughts so that others can say no way its XXXXX

If it was vestry, you might be able to track him down on other entries somewhere?

I think it is Foreman Camberwell Vestry. On the 1881 same census sheet there are two "Labourer Vestry"
Vestries were responsible for paving and maintaining some, or all of the roads in the parish. The scope of the Vestries decreased throughout the 19th century, until, from the 1890's, they were confined for all practical purposes to ecclesiastical affairs.
