Cobh family search
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 20:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to research a family living in the Cobh/Queenston area of Cork. The family name is Tavendale. I wonder if someone can tell me if this is a common surname in the area, many thanks.

Tavendale is shown up as a complete negative for every search I do anywhere in Ireland

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Newcastle/Shore_Road/243668/

Above link is the only trace anywhere in Ireland that I could find and when you look at original census it don't even appear for sure to be Tavendale

Just this week, I've just been going through CoI records for Clonmell Parish, Cove (now Cobh) beginning at the very early 1800s and was amazed at the number of unusual surnames and places of birth. no doubt because of the port.

What was even more amazing was the number of marriages between Mariners and local girls.

Cheers

Findmypast have the army service records for four Tavendales, and they were all born in Forfarshire (Angus). They were born 1869 to 1888, so a bit later than the period you are interested in.

Could the family you are looking for be named TEVENDALE? There was a family of this name, from Scotland.
There was a tragedy struck them some years ago, which I would not like to discuss on public forum.
If these are who you are looking for I can give you some information, privately.

My wife has Margaret Tavendale, who married John Wester,  and was b. c. 1791, d. 1857, in her line. Margaret's parents were Alexander Tavendale and Margaret Watson. Any connections?
