F.A. Fairlie & W.E. Fairlie, two Scottish tennis-playing brothers?
« on: Thursday 09 February 12 18:58 GMT (UK) »

I'm looking for some basic biographical information on the two very early lawn tennis players, whose first names I don't even know. They were always listed as W.E. Fairlie and F.A. Fairlie. They played tennis in the early 1880s.

F.A. Fairlie was runner-up to John Galbraith Horn in the men's singles event at the Scottish Championships in 1882. W.E. Fairlie reached the final of the first prestigious Northern Lawn Tennis Tournament, held in Manchester in July 1880.

I'm sure that they were brothers, and more than likely Scottish. I'm just looking for some basic data, e.g. date and place of birth.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Mark

Hi

In the 1891 census there is a Francis A Fairlie born c 1855 in Ayrshire living in Kensington. Using this I have found a Francis Archibald Fairlie living with his family in Symington Ayrshire. Also in the family is a Walter Edmund Fairlie born c 1860.

Possibly the two brothers you were looking for

Hi Mark,

There is another sporting link here, Francis Archibald Fairlie was born in Symington on 12th May 1854 (on pre-1855 Scotland peoples website) to parents James Ogilvie Fairlie and Elizabeth Constance Houeson Craufurd (sic), (extracted record IGI).

James Ogilvy Fairlie was founder of Prestwick Golf Club and the man who started the Open Golf Championship. See the following link, http://www.rootschat.com/links/0k60/

Hi All,

Walter Edwin Fairlie was born in Symington 05 April, 1860, this is an extracted record on IGI. The parents are the same as Francis Archibald Fairlie's so confirmed as brothers.

(*) it looks like Walter dies in 1943 in Andover Hampshire

Possible marriage in 1892 to a Jessie Potter in St George Hanover Square London
