marriages at Hampstead St. John's
« on: Friday 10 February 12 21:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi does anyone know whether the marriage registers for Hampstead St. John's can be found on line anywhere?

So far only the Baptism's & burials seem to be on Ancestry. The marriages don't even seem to be there to browse.

Hi Linda

You can search and browse 1801-1921, they're under the borough of  Camden, Hampstead St John.

They aren't complete though

Hi Dawn,

Oops, Perhaps I should have said, I need the ones that cover 1700 - about 1800.  :)

Hi Linda

They are there but not so easy to find.

Go to the LMA landing page and under the 3 main baptism, marriage and burial sections is the browsable section for events 1538-1812.

Select this and then go to the right of the next page. You can then select Camden as the borough and go to the drop down box and select St John at Hampstead but then you have the problem of which year to look through. This is caused by the registers being composite ones ie all 3 types in one register.

The other way is to use the search function of the left of the page.

Put a year such as 1750 in the marriage box year and then under keyword, type John Hampstead and then search.

You will then get a list of all the marriages in 1750. From there you can scroll forward or backwards through the images or refine the search to find people with the same first name or surname. Leaving names blank means you can look down the results if the entry you are after is mis-transcribed, you can sometimes spot the errors.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dawn,

This is the data set I searched before, so when I saw your message, I thought I was going mad.

I followed your instructions and this time went through each set (apart from the earliest set) in the hope that I'd missed them.

There are 11 images in the set 1737 - 1787 for marriages right at the beginning. After this they are all Baptisms and burials. Part of this data set is repeated (images 12 to 45 are repeated at image 46 onwards). The marriages are from 1737 - 1753 when they stop.

The rest of the sets contain only baptisms and burials and the sets covering 1800 -1810 are all over the place (I think they are copies).

So to summarise, The only marriages I have found on the St John at Hampstead parish are from 1737 to 1753.

On the Virtual tour of Hampstead site the marriage transcripts stop at 1747. I am wondering if the registers no longer exist.

Thanks for your help any way,

Linda  :(

p.s. I've just checked the LMA site for the registers at St' John's and according to them the registers and even indexes survive.
