Jane White

Looking for any information on Jane White, widow of Gordon White.  From her death certificate, 30/04/1888, she was illegitimate and her mother was Ellen Blair but at some point she became Jane Rodney.

How old was she when she died?

Presumably she was born as Jane Blair so one of 2 possibilities

Her mother married a Mr Rodney and Jane took his name

or - Jane was married previously before she married Gordon White

Have you checked SP for a Blair/Rodney marriage for either Ellen or Jane

What name did Jane marry under - Blair or Rodney

Hi,

She was 76,  I haven't checked for previous marriages for either, married under Jane Rodney.

If her marriage entry shows her as a widow - then she presumable married a Mr Rodney at some point?  When did she marry White

If she is shown as a spinster - you will need to look for a possible marriage for Ellen to a Mr Rodney

The IGI shows the marriage as 1830 so as she was only 18 at that time - an earlier marriage is highly unlikely

Perhaps her biological father was surname Rodney

The free 1911 index has 4 possible entries for her name and birthyear - one living in Barnstaple

EDIT - right answer - wrong thread - sorry!!

Hi,

Jane died in 1888 so 1911 entries cannot be for her.

From her death certificate she must have been born about 1812 but I have not been able to find a birth certificate.

Hi Fraser

i think Carole was probably dealing with two or more queries at once and posted this reply on your thread by mistake.  Barnstaple is in Devon so it was obviously a different query.

The free 1911 index has 4 possible entries for her name and birthyear - one living in Barnstaple

Were any of Jane and Gordon's children born 1855  or later as those would give another check for a maiden name.

Also note that it was quite common in Scotland for illegitimate children to be called by their father's surname.

It might be worth checking if there were any  xyz Rodney  in the area.

Hi,

I have just checked what info I have and there is a daughter, Agnes, born in 1855 in Aberlady.  I will try SP and see if I can get a bc.
