Nicholl's Hospital before 1920
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 17:02 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone have any information about Nicholl's Hospital circa 1915 to 1920 ?

I have a young boy that, according to his school register he was admitted 15Jan1917.
His father had died one year previously, he had two older siblings that appear to
have remained in their regular school(s) until they were over age 14 (1918 and 1919)

Curious as to why the young boy would have been sent to this school .

Any thoughts - greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Heather

Hi Heather,

there are some records at Chethams library for Nicholls Hospital
http://www.chethams.org.uk/faq.html
says "We also hold records of boys who went to the Nicholls Hospital from its foundation until its amalgamation with Chetham's in the 1950s"

I've never used the Chethams Library myself but I have heard other people say they are helpful if you email them.

This site about the history of Ardwick has some pictures along with the original foundation plaque, which explains the purpose of the school.

Your ancestor must have been thought worthy of a good education and was perhaps nominated by somebody who knew the family

Hope that helps

Thank you very much Barbara  :)

Will contact Chethams Library for further information about this young boy.

It is nice to think that someone helped him - when I first saw the name
Nicholls Hospital - I assumed the worst.

Best regards,

Heather
