COMPLETED WITH THANKS Did the SHADWELLS go to Alderney?
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 00:36 GMT (UK) »
I'm chasing a family after the 1901 England Census.  I can find no census records or any bdm records for any of the family after 1901.

The reason I'm wondering if they've gone to Alderney - Sarah (nee Hook), the mother of the family was born in Alderney.

Father: Charles SHADWELL b. 1872 Devizes, Wilthshire, England
Mother: Sarah nee HOOK b. 1871 Alderney
Frederick Charles L: b. 1894 Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Ellen Rose L: b. 1895 Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Cecilia Freda K: b. 1900 Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

Cheers,
Alison  :)

Alderney is included in the 1911 census, and there is no sign of them there?

But how about this?

29th March 1906
SS Canada, Dominion Line bound for Halifax and Portland

Charles Shadwell, age 33, Married, Labourer

7th June 1906
SS Canada, Dominion Line

Emma Shadwell   age 34
Ellen Shadwell   age 9
Cecilia Shadwell  age 5
Fred Shadwell   age 11
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

That certainly seems to be them, although Sarah has had a name change  :-\

I'd say she's probably the same woman; she's the right age and I can't find a death for her or a remarriage for Charles.  The children have the right names and are the correct ages.

Thanks so much,
Alison  ;D

That's what I was thinking! ;D

Maybe (like a lot of my ancestors) she had a middle name she sometimes used as a first name?
