Good morning,

Deffinately DSO, then 1914 or 1914/15 star, depending on when he went to the front. Then he should have the war medal but the ribbon does'nt look right. then the victory medal with MID oak leaf. can't see the last one as the ribbon is turned sideways. The 1914 star was only given to those present at the front between 5 aug and midnight 22 nov 1914, if you were under fire then you also received a bar, this was denoted by a rosette worn on the ribbon.

Thanks John

That'll be the 1915 Star then. Lt Col Borthwick was at Gallipoli as Adjutant and by the time the Division landed in Egypt some months later he was Lt Col OiC the Battalion.  Whilst looking for bits and bobs on him I thought he had had the MC as well as the DSO in 1918. I was only scanning through material though and only saw a citation (which could have been the DSO?) Is that the MC next to the DSO? Frustatingly his MIC does not seem to be available.

Hopefully Andras will track down a photo and let us know.

Good evening,

Thanks Gwil, that clears up the matter of the 3rd medal. It is the MC which would normally be worn after the DSO, however it appears campaign stars of equal importance can be worn first; http://www.petergh.f2s.com/medals.htm . Near the top on this link is the explanation, so its DSO, 1914/15 star, MC, victory medal with MID rosette and maybe the one we can't see is the war medal but out of order for some reason. What threw me was his rank as the MC is only for warrant officers and officers up to captain. That means he got the MC fairly early on before promotion.

Have had a proper look at that citation I mentioned now and it's a bar to the DSO not the MC thus casting some doubt on my assertion he may be Lt Col Borthwick. Still worth looking up though?

Good evening,

I don't know if I was sleeping last time I posted but it can't be the MC, it's a medal not a cross. I think I just had the ribbon in my mind which would match the MC ribbon, light dark light. I can't find a medal that matches that would go in that position after the star. Back to square one  ???  :-\  :-[
