Definitely 'gave', as the numbers on the right show the amount of money involved.  See www.scottishhandwriting.com for more information on different letter forms, including the letter 'v' looking like a 'b'.

Thanks for that link Archivos,very useful,I've put it in my savers.

Just one more thing,are we talking pounds,shillings and pence here.The top of the columns is black and unreadable so my lot gave 01 10 00.Would that be £1/10 shillings,seems a lot for those days.

It's a great site for checking Scottish handwriting, I use it quite regularly.  I like doing the poser questions too!

I would imagine that it's pounds, shillings and pence but it's more likely to be Scots pounds than Sterling.  Scots was worth a bit less than Sterling at that time.  There's good information on the SCAN (Scottish Archive Network) site about currency, as well as a glossary, access to archive catalogues and a knowledge base section as well.  It's at www.scan.org.uk

I think it is pounds, shillings and pence.  The SCAN wesbsite has this -

From 1600 onwards the exchange rate was stabilised at 12:1, so one pound Scots = 1s. 8d sterling, and 1 pound sterling = 12 pounds Scots.

So, if it is £1 10s Scots, it would be something like 1 shilling and something pence Sterling.

Ok, that explains it Archivos, and makes much more sense. I didn't realise it was a 12:1 exchange rate between Scots and sterling.

Currency is horrible!  I find it really confusing to work out.  Before 1600 it's even worse as the exchange rate between Scots and Sterling wasn't fixed, so it's really difficult to know what's what.  Then when they have merks as well...

Best just to write down the numbers and not really worry what they *actually* mean!
