Is this my Grandads teacup?
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 21:08 GMT (UK) »
It might sound like an odd question.... you wouldn't even know who he is!

But my Great Great Grandad, Ebenezer Armour, was a china merchant for a good many years in Kirkcaldy in Fife. Fairly recently I was informed that he also made his own pottery towhit a cup and saucer were presented from an old sideboard.

I have no idea how old these items are but I was hoping one of you boffins out there might be able to date the trend (patterns, glazing, shape etc) which should hopefully support (or otherwise) the case.

Thanks for anyone who can help.

Cheers

Steve

You do not mention a date but I see that an Ebenezer Armour, potter, is listed in the 1851 census.  This suggests he worked on the production side although whether on his own or in one of the many local potteries is unclear.  I have sent you details of a contact in the Fife Pottery Society who may be able to throw some light on this.

In a later census's (censi?) 1861, 1871, 1881 had him as a china merchant as did his death certificate but I have no doubt (as you rightly mention) he was involved in the manufacturing earlier on.

Thanks (again) for the contact info. :)
