Hi All

With all the info already found here, thought best to post on this thread rather than the Midlothian post.

An English birth place fo James may not be wrong (as found on that 1911 census entry that aghadowey has linked).

There is this 1881 census entry in Leith, Midlothian:

William Bain 35, ship plater b. Glasgow
Ann Bain 32 b. Campbeltown, Argyll
William Bain 11 b. Port Glasgow, Renfrew
Ann Bain 6 b. England
James Bain 4 b. England
Rosina Bain 2 b. Leith

Address: 9 Wilkie Place, Leith Midlothian

Parents above look to be a William Bain and an Ann Thomson who married on 3 Sept. 1867 in Clyde, Glasgow.

Likely entry for the family in 1901 (with James away from home it looks like, was he married by now?) www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Duncairn_Ward/Sea_View_Street/1004889/

I am very interested in the Bain family from Antrim my great grandfather was James Bain died 1954  last address 35 Fife Street Belfast aged 76. He apparently was born in scotland and was divourced once married twice. His Daughter was Nora Bain ( maybe norma who has a nursing hospital named after her. James' wife was Mary Jane Bain. James helped on the titanic.

Yes, Norah Kathleen Bain was a Sister Tutor in Whiteabbey  Hospital when I trained there in the 60's.  NK Bain was the most beautiful soul. She was my mentor and I adored her. She turned out amazing nurses may I add. She was ahead of her time. I have worked in many hospitals in Ireland England and South Africa and have yet to see the standard of nursing that Whiteabbey offered. All down to Sister Bain. It is no wonder there is a part of the hospital named after her. I am delighted to hear that. My happiest days were spent there and she played a major role in that happiness!

The part named after her is apparently known as Norah Bain House.

I too am looking for the Bain family tree.. James Bain (1930) is my grandfather, from fife street who had a sister Rosena and brother Matthew and I think a half sister Bertha.. His mum Mary Jane died 1966 (was McIlfatrick, and previously married) I can find her roots easily but cant go any further back before James Bain (1954)

More records have become available online since this topic started, I will try not to repeat any links provided thus far...

A plater called James Bain, bachelor, son of plater William Bain, married a Nellie McCay, daughter of railway servant Charles McCay, on 26 December 1898:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1898/10432/5798636.pdf

(James' address of 17 Seaview Street in the above marriage record is a match for the 1901 Ireland census return for his parents and siblings posted at Reply #10 above.)

James and Nellie had a daughter Mary Bain on 14 November 1899:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1899/02021/1775461.pdf

Mary would be the 'Minnie' shown in the following 1901 Ireland census return for house 2 in Glasgow Street (note James' birthplace of England is the same as stated in the relevant 1911 Ireland census return posted at Reply #5 above):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Duncairn_Ward__Belfast/Glasgow_Street/932563/

James and Nellie had a son Charles Bain on 5 July 1901:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01946/1752017.pdf

Charles died less than a year later, note the informant was 'William Bain Grandfather present at death 17 Seaview St':
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1902/05697/4606209.pdf

James and Nellie had a son William McCay Bain on 24 February 1903, Nellie was recorded as Eleanor Jane - note the comment against her name '(deceased)':
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1903/01882/1731985.pdf

William McCay Bain would be the son shown in the 1911 Ireland census return for house 31 in Glasgow Street posted at Reply #5 above. The daughter Mary / Minnie Bain shown in the 1901 census return for house 2 in Glasgow Street that I posted above was by 1911 living with James' parents and siblings in Skegoneill Avenue:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Duncairn/Skegoneill_Avenue/142975/

The death of Nellie / Eleanor Jane Bain occurred on 4 March 1903 due to the post natal condition puerperal fever:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1903/05673/4598108.pdf

Widower James Bain then remarried on 28 August 1904, to a Mary Elizabeth McCay, daughter of railway porter George McCay - I don't yet know if she was related to Nellie / Eleanor Jane:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1904/10205/5713797.pdf

James' and Nellie's daughter Mary / Minnie Bain died in 1918:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1918/05174/4427742.pdf

She was/is buried with relatives here:

While on burials, this looks like James' father and other relatives here:

On 27 October 1920, James Bain remarried again, to Mary Whitford nee McIlfetrick:
