now that i have your attention i was wondering that where it says on census's for example number of rooms - 2, did it mean literally (that the whole family lived in two rooms) or did that mean two bedrooms ?

Should say on heading for that column in census form- it was number of rooms in total not number of bedrooms.

Neither the 1891 or 1901 Census Acts, or the instructions to the householders or enumerators ever define 'room'. The householder was responsible for providing this information in 1891, but it became the enumerator's job in 1901.
The 1911 householder's schedule has;
"Write below the Number of Rooms in this Dwelling (House, Tenement, or Apartment). Count the kitchen as a room but do not count scullery, landing, lobby, closet, bathroom,  ; nor warehouse, office, shop."

at least they had a little space, i felt sorry for my g, grandfather sharing 2 rooms with 9 daughters for a while

In the 1901 census my grt grandpa was listed as living in 2 rooms and his sister in the same close in 1 room.  I managed to find documents giving the layout of the blocks in their street.  The flats were a room and kitchen and a singlend.

In 1891 I have a family living in Halifax - father, mother, 6 daughters and a son.  In 1911, same address, husband, wife, daughter, grandson and two lodgers - rooms declared as 4.

I stayed at this same house in the 1950's/60's - a back-to-back house in Halifax.  As I remember there was a cellar, ground floor was living room plus kitchen.  First floor was one bedroom and a bathroom.  Plus an attic.  In the "garden" was an outside toilet down some steps.
