What happened to my great grandfather, Thomas Johnson?
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 11:47 GMT (UK) »
 ???

Hello,

I am hoping that someone out there will be able to tell me what happened to my great grandfather Thomas Johnson.

Unfortunately I never met him. The only information that I know about him is: -

Born: 13th April 1901 in the sub-district of Wingate, Easington in County Durham

He married Lilian Thompson at the Registary Office in the district of Easington in the county of Durham.24th April 1930.
Thomas Johnson aged 28 years, Bachelor, Blacksmith's labourer at colliery, Resident at Front Street, Hesledon, father's name George Johnson (Deceased) Coal Miner.

Three Children:

Address: 24 Apr 1930 in Hesledon, Durham, England; Front Street, Hesledon, County Durham, England
Address: 1933 in Hartlepool, Durham, England; (Possibly) 16 Keswick Street, West Hartlepool.

I am told by my father that at some point Thomas and Lillian split up and Thomas moved to Monk Hesleden with a lady called Nattrass who had two sons called Thomas and James Nattrass.
Thomas worked at the colleries

I would love to find out what happened to him to gain some closure and peace of mind.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Ok, so I've got the death certificate but, I still cannot confirm that this is the right guy. I need to first, confirm his mothers name. Thomas Johnson (no middle name), was living with in Front Street, Hesleden at the time of his first marriage If someone has access to the elrctoral roll for that area in 1930. Hopefully they will be able confirm his mother's name if he was living with her then. His father had already past away by then (according to his marriage certificate to Lilian Thompson 1930).

Secondly, I am also looking to find out the first name of the lady that he is meant to have lived with in Monk Hesleden later in his life. The lady's surname was Nattress or Nattrass. This would have been in the late 1950's or early 1960's. I am pretty certain that they did not marry, because, after much searching, I have found no record of a marriage between a Thomas Johnson and Nattress/Nattrass.

have you tried finding him in 1911 census? his mother should be on there?
on 1911 census site, if you search for thomas johnson b1901 +/-1 yr, with other person first name George, only 4 results come up with name Thomas, no middle name. Of those, only 1 has Easington district.  (Unfortunately, we aren't allowed to do look ups for 1911 census. ) It costs 10 credits to view transcripts, cost is 6.95 for 60 credits

I think that is probably them. If you look at the original image you will see they had 11 children but 5 had died. Helpfully, they have put the names of the 5 deceased children on the form as well , then must have realised their mistake and crossed them out. Maybe some of the names ring a bell?

Thank you annie24b,

This is some fantastic research! My next thing is to find out what happened to him later in his life. I have been trying to follow the information from my father he gave me that he lived with a lady called Nattrass, or Nattress, in Monk Hesleden. This would have been in the late 1950's or early 1960's but, I have been sent some information that may suggest that he lived with a lady called Mary J Johnson in Hartlepool in 1969. Is this the Nattress/Nattrass lady that I have been looking for? If so, why can I not find a marriage record?
