Sage family in Hawarden
« on: Sunday 04 March 12 00:16 GMT (UK) »
have traced my Grandfather's family the SAGE family back to Hawarden where his grandfather was born, along with siblings in 1790s. Looking for information about his parent -John Sage who married to Elizable Ashe of Ewloe. One of Charles Frederick's brothers married a SELLER of the Chester Brewers.

Anyone know anything about these names please?

Hello Adelina..

And welcome to Rootschat.

The only mention of John Sage, and Elizabeth Ashe in Ewloe 1697-1851, is at the baptism of their sons........

William Sage / born February 7th 1793 / Baptised October 11th 1796
Henry Denny Sage / born July 6th 1796 / baptised October 11th 1796
Cahrles Frederick Sage / Baptised October 5th 1798

In each case, John Sage is described as a Gent, of Ewloe

Hello JeannieR,

Thank you for your reply, This is where I got stuck, but have never been able to get back to the previous generation. I recently found a record of a previously unknown female, who seems to be a sister, buried in the churchyard at Hawarden. Would Ewloe be likely to have any records of its own?

I really like Rootschat, wish I had found it earlier:-)

With best wishes,

Hi Adelina,

This might be completely off the mark, but familysearch has a marriage between a John Sage and Elizabeth Ashe in Devon, 7 july 1780.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N2GD-V9M

This is, at best, a remote possibility... but if this turns out to be your John Sage, there are some records of his business activities in the 1780s here:

Just do a "search on page" for Sage.  That John is a gentleman too.

RK

To muddy the waters even further (sorry :'(), here is a burial record for Henry Denny Sage - name and age look good - but burial is in Gloucestershire:

Hi RK,

Thank you for your help. The Devon reference is quite possible as the Family had links with the county. I have often wondered if the time living in Hawarden was connected with having maritime links with Chester when it was still a busy port.

My Grandfathers Grandfather Charles Frederick Sage was brother to Henry Denny and by 1851 he was living in Clifton Gloucestershire and a director of the Bristol Cotton Company. In 1841 he was living in a village near Gloucester.

Prior to that he had been in Barbados for about 15 years.

I had taken it that Elizabeth Ashe came from Ewloe, but perhaps the comments I have seen referring to Elizabeth Ashe of Ewloe, meant where they lived, rather than where she was born.
I have seen references to John Sage in Kent but do not know of any links here.

Will concentrate back in Devon as well because Stoke Damerel does ring bells.

Many thanks

Adelina
