Thorndon / Wetheringsett - STAFF
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 19:50 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help please with baptism / birth for the following:

Eliza STAFF - born c1839. Listed in 1841 census of Thorndon as aged 2. Particularly want thebaptism record as I am having trouble identifying mother / father.

Rachel Staff - IGI has baptism 6 Apr 1817 but lists place only as "Suffolk". Census of 1841 lists as 20 year-old farm servant in Thorndon.

Lionel Staff - appears in 1841 and 1851 census in Thorndon. Place of birth Earl Stonham c1810, but suspect may be Thorndon/Wetheringsett?

many thanks

That is the correct family. My "hunch" is that Elizar is the daughter of the eldest daughter - Elizabeth .... but don't bother trying to work it out from the census info.

In 1851 she is listed as the "grand daughter" of Stephen and Mary. In 1861 she is working in London. On her marriage in 1868 she states that Stephen is her father.

This is why I am trying to see if anyone can find the people in original parish registers.

The three Harriotts are respectively Martha's, Mary's and Elizabeth's

Hello David

Re: Eliza STAFF

This might be a red herring but it may help - from Suffolk Burial Index:

Emma Staff daughter of Elizabeth, abode Stowupland, buried 12 May 1838 age 7weeks Thorndon All Saints.

Emma's details appear on FreeBMD (birth & burial) in the Stow RD (incs Stowupland).  You say you think Eliza may be the child of Elizabeth as well but I cannot see a birth reg for Eliza Staff on the same website in Suffolk let alone in either Stow or Hartismere RDs but I did find the birth of an Elizabeth Jane Scarf Sep Qtr 1839 Ref. 12/402 Stow RD - the names are similar could this possibly be Eliza?

Possible that both were bpt in Stowupland if that is where Elizabeth lived.

Re:  Lionel STAFF c1810

Lionel STAFF married Mary Ann WELHAM 19 Jan 1834 Wetheringsett.  Both appeared to be otp as nothing to the contrary is noted on the Suffolk Marriage Index.  However, as I am sure you will know, that only means that is where they were residing on their marriage.  Indeed Mary Ann later states on the Crs that she was born in Baylham.

Lionel consistently states Stonham on the Crs right up to 1881 - there are 3 seperate Stonham parishes - Earl Stonham, Stonham Aspal & Little Stonham (aka Stonham Parva).  Could they possibly have been NC - there is a very active baptist chapel on the Norwich Rd,Stonham now & it was certainly there in 1870s.

Thanks for the information. I do not believe they were NC - number of baptisms on IGI and elsewhere for members of the family .. but I'll bear it in mind.

Unfortunately there are a number of Scarf / Scarffs in the area so I don't think that this is relevant; and Lionel is (I believe) the brother of the Stephen in the family I am chasing up.

Thanks for looking this up anyway - I'll have to check back to my records and see if I have "covered" the Stowupland angle.

Yes I got the impression that Stephen & Lionel could have been brothers.

& yes I thought about Scarf too - very similar especially when you chuck in the Suffolk accent.

The Suffolk Burial Index covers the parishes of Thorndon, Wetheringsett & the Stonhams & lists Staff burials earliest 1810 Thorndon, earliest 1821 Wetheringsett & none in the Stonhams, which you would expect if the family came from any of the parishes.  Might just be that the records are not available or have not been fully transcribed.

Could they have come from Norfolk - Thorndon is not far from the Suffolk/Norfolk boundary.
