Thankyou, Jon, for this reply.
I know that Thomas Stilling was a draper somewhere in Hobart c1856 for a while, then went bankrupt.  They left Hobart for Melbourne c 1860 (their next child was born in St Kilda), then later for New Zealand.
I can't find them on departures from Tasmania  - "they must have swum".
Also, I can't find his arrival in Tasmania - I know he was born in Calais France c1827.

Birth certificates in Victoria list all previous children living and deceased to the marriage.
Information on all certificates in Victoria

STILLING Elizabeth Ellen
Father Thomas William  Mother Ann SHORT
At St Kilda  1860  Reg#18735

Link to purchase an image of a certificate [AUD$17.50] and immediately download

Where did you source the information about a male birth in 1853 in Tasmania?

Are you sure about this 1853 birth?  They were married 21 Jun 1853 and first child born 29 Apr 1854.  I have searched all births in Tas with mother Ann SHORT and Jonc has given the four births registered with her as mother.

The business appears to be in the name of Mrs STILLING?

Surely your family of interest would have departed from Melbourne for New Zealand not from Tasmania.

Have you requested assistance with their arrival on the NZ Board?

Is this her death in NZ?  If so, do you have this certificate?  This would list the number of children to the marriage also.
1866/2155   STILLING Ann

This 1888 marriage announcement in NZ states that Francis John STILLING is the youngest son of Thomas William STILLING of Sydney.  I would suggest that Francis is the unnamed male born 31 May 1859.

This appears to be Thomas W's 2nd marriage

1844/1885
STILLING    Thomas W
SMITH    Eliza A
District Sydney

and a son died in 1906.

Have you this certificate
11259/1912
STILLING Thomas W    86 years at Manly
District Manly

Have you searched the Australian digitised newspapers for any information

Hi Helen

You may know already that rootschat.com has a New Zealand section, but here are two excellent websites:

New Zealand BDM's at
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

Papers Past (New Zealand)

Thankyou Jean,
I have used Papers Past.
Also, I found the death of Thomas Stilling's first wife, including a photo of her grave site, with no headstone, but including the plot number.
He also fathered two more children in NZ after his first wife died.

Thankyou, Cando, for all the information/websites you have provided.  I had some of the information and you have given me more "food for thought".
Thomas (TWS as I refer to him) was interesting:  He was from Calais, then  maybe he was in Adelaide (not certain), then to Hobart (c1853-59), a child was then born in Melbourne to his wife Ann Short (1860), she followed him to Dunedin where Ann died in 1866.  Thomas then had 2 more children to two different "wives" (marriage records not found).  He then went to Noumea (c 1872-1885) where he had a warehouse and dabbled in mining  He finally moved to Sydney where he lived at various addresses and married Eliza Anne Smith and they had several children.  He fathered 13 children altogether.  He died at Manly, as you stated, in 1912 and was buried in Manly cemetery.
So, thankyou for your assistance.  I shall keep pondering and searching and possibly adding a few more pieces to his wandering life story.
His time in Hobart is still a bit hazy - his arrival and departure and the location of his drapery business in Hobart.

Hi HBelle :)

Your initial enquiry was for assistance with a 1853 birth....and I don't think there was one however you would need the 1860 birth cert in Vic find how many births preceeded the 1860 birth.

I asked number of questions in my post......

Where did you source the information about a male birth in 1853 in Tasmania?

Have you requested assistance with their arrival on the NZ Board?

Have you this certificate
11259/1912
STILLING Thomas W    86 years at Manly
District Manly

Do you have any certificates?

I can find no evidence of Thomas STILLING in South Australia.  The only STILLING in the SA records is a Joseph Henry born c1823 and Michael b 1842.  What leads you to believe Thomas was in South Australia?

His time in Hobart is still a bit hazy - his arrival and departure and the location of his drapery business in Hobart.

The linked advertisement in reply#3 states his business was opening on 17 May 1856 at 47, Wellington Bridge between Walch's and Dr Crooke's...and also in the advertisement...adjoining Cook's and Keen's Dispensary.  The business was in his wife's name as had he been recently discharged as being insolvent.

I did find a Thomas STILLING in Victoria before 1860  and it is possible that Thomas travelled back and forth from Melbourne to Hobart.

Arrival in Sydney from Nouméa

I assume you found his 'various addresses' in the Sands Directories.  You obviously have far more information about Thomas than you have posted here including you thought his father was Wm, a mariner.  However I think we have answered your question about a 1853 birth and I suggest you purchase the 1860 Vic cert to further your research as it would detail the number of issue prior to Elizabeth Ellen's birth.
