Hi Wozzle

Parents' information is only very rarely given in marriage entries (usually banns before 1855) until 1855 when statutory registration was introduced.

Usually, the best thing to do is to try and find a baptism record or a  post-registration death record. The post-1855 death records usually give both parents' names. These are available for searching and download from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

When the marriage date is so close to 1855 and the start of official records of B, M and D, it's worth checking Scotlandspeople to see if either or both of them survived that long. I wouldn't bother looking for the death of a William Scott post-1855 as it's such a common name, but Whitelock is less common, and you can check a woman's death under both the maiden and married names.

I've tried this, and cutting a long story short, it wasn't William Scott but Andrew Scott and Margaret Whitelock who were married in 1828 at Kelso. She survived until 1885, dying at the age of 78, widow of Andrew Scott, shoemaker, and her parents were Andrew Whitelock, butcher, and Margaret Stirling. I've found several Andrew Scotts dying in Kelso from 1847 (aged 39) onwards, but none seem to be the husband of a Mgt. Whitelock.

Funnily enough, a Margaret Scott, pauper, widow of Robert Whitelock, drover, died in 1871 in Kelso.

Harry
