COMPLETED! Thank you! Basford RD, Derby: What does this mean?
« on: Tuesday 13 March 12 15:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello! I have been looking for info on my husband's great(x2) grandfather, Henry Cook.

I've been all over ancestry.com, but I can't find any *firm* records. I did come across another member who had his death listed as "1871, BASFORD RD, Derby". I think that Notts may have 'absorbed' this area at some point, but I'm not sure if that was the case at the time he died.

All I know for sure is that we was married to Sarah Cartledge in 1866 and that she was widowed by 1871. They had a son, Harry, who was two in 1871. I can find no other *solid* records about this man before then!

Where is this place? Why would someone put that as his place of death? I have tried to contact the ancestry member who made that entry, but haven't heard anything back.

Any info appreiciated! :)

If the person doesnt reply to tell you where they got the info from, and you really want to know where Henry died, then you will have to get the death cert yourself to see. At least you will then be 100% sure of the info.

Have you got the ref for the 1871 sighting with Sarah widowed and Harry age 2? I cant see them... well, not in that area

Thank you, lizdb. Would the record also tell me how he died and who his parents were?

It will give you the cause of death, but wont tell you his parents names.

His marriage cert should give you a father's name and occupation. And hopefully as age at marriage - though may just say "of full age".

I suspect that the person who had henry's death as 1871 Basford Rd Derby may have got their facts slightly muddled. There is a death for Henry Cook 1Q 1871 Basford, this registration district covers parts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, but does not include the city of Derby.

Listing of areas covered by Basford Registration District, with the dates they were included:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/basford.html

As Liz says - parts of Notts & Derbys.

Thank you so much! I had it in my head that 'RD' might stand for 'Road'. :o I feel very silly now! :D Perhaps I should be asking for help on the Notts board then!

Razzle Dazzle (or should that be another "RD") - it could also be Rural District - but according to wikipedia Basford Rural District  existed 1894-1974 so not right for your date, so probably not the meaning in your context. Too many meanings for the same two letters :o
