Looking at the policeman's unform ....... it does seem a little different but definitely of British origin.
I wonder if it might be a colony of the time ..... say Malta or Gibraltar or some other place where the Brits have trod?

Well, it never occurred to me that it might be on foreign soil. I thought it was quintessentially English, even though it may not actually be in Dorset.

Do they have 'County Police' in Gibraltar and Malta?

Not one of the Channel Islands by any chance is it? During at least part of the 19th century they were regarded as part of Hampshire I think, but were they all?

I wondered about that but the helmet is the wrong shape for the Channel Islands. It also appears to be the wrong shape for Bermuda,  Bahamas, Ireland or the Isle of Man. I think if we could identify the helmet it would be a great help, it is certainly unique.

To the rhs of the policemans head is a sign on the wall which seems to read Royal can anyone make it out?
