I am looking for help from anyone with access to local Cheltenham papers in 1925 - or can point me at such a source

My full notes on Ewen Cameron Bruce are  here, click link

He was born Cheltenham 1890

Joined Tank Corps in WW1, MC in 1917 and lost an arm

Went back to tanks and volunteered for Russia, where ironically in 1919 captured Stalingrad with one tank. He got DSO for this.

Joined Auxiliary Police in Ireland and was dismissed for striking civilians.

1920 Robbed a local Creamery in Kilkenny and was sentenced to 2 year in prison. Lost his MC and DSO for this as well

Returned to Cheltenham and died 1925 Apr 16. I am anxious to see if this was covered locally at the time, or discover where he was buried.

That very kind of you

Certainly shows that he did not commit suicide - given the funeral was held straight after his death. A Suicide would have entailed an Inquest and delay

I would be grateful if you could look when you are in the Gloucester Archives

Hi,
I checked St Mary parish church Cheltenham for the burial of Ewen Cameron BRUCE, circa April 1925, but unfortunately all burials ceased prior to this date and were transfered to Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC) Cemetery. There is NO record of Ewen's burial there.
I did find a BRUCE burial though which will probably be of interest:-
Alan George Cameron BRUCE was buried at CBC Cemetery 17th January 1929, aged 54.
If you can obtain a copy of Ewen's death certificate to find out in which parish he died I'll have another go at tracing his burial.

Thanks very much for that, that is very interesting. Looks as if they buried him away from his father - it is always difficult where "problems" have surrounded an individual like Ewen Cameron Bruce, as to how the family would have reacted.

I will see whether I can get any more on him, and re-post here if I do

Thanks for that Graham,

It is a very helpful link as you say

My problem is that I live in Spain, so my chances of getting to actual paper records in UK are remote - I can only really access online stuff, though I do make an annual pilgrimage to the National Archives in Kew!
