Carlton Colville marriage 1818
« on: Sunday 18 March 12 13:18 GMT (UK) »
I have Charles Hickleton marrying Marianne Gent 20 Jan 1818.
I cannot seem to find any information about Marianne, is she local. They had a son George Gent Hickleton 1828 so Gent should be important to them but I cannot find her.

there is only one Gent in carlton colville on the suffolk burial index:

Frances Gent 19/2/1861 aged 80 (1781)

a tree on A* has your Marianne with a daughter Frances(1819 -1892) so it is highly likely that this Frances may be mariannes mother. tree does not have birth/parents.

one other Gent on SBI abode Carlton but buried Oulton,st michael:

John Gent 21/7/1831 aged 60 (1771)

Following on from what Diddy has come up with there is a submitted entry on the familysearch website that says:

Frances HICKLETON bpt 30 Nov 1818 Carlton Colville.  Parents Charles Hickleton & Marianne.  So could she have been named after a family member?

Frances GENT c1786 is living in Carlton Colville in 1841 with a Jane Plant 38, Emma Plant 4, & John Plant 9mths. She states she was not born in County.

in 1851 she is still in Carlton Colville, widow age 64 (c1787), proprietor of houses, born Horsley, Essex.  Still has Emma Plant age 14 grand daughter living with her (born Carlton Colville).

However if Marianne was born c1792 it is unlikely that this Frances would have been her mother even tho the dates on the CR & SBI differ by 5-6yrs. It is possible she could have been a sister in law or even a step mother.

Could they have all come from Essex? There is a Horsley Cross east of Colchester, Essex.

from the Suffolk Marriage Index:

Jane GENT married William Henry PLANT (of Lowestoft) 1 Jan 1818 Oulton

I also found Susannah GENT married Thomas DOWSING 25 Jan 1827 Lowestoft.

Susannah & Thomas DOWSING are on the 1851C she gives her pob as Lowestoft c1806.

In 1851 there is a William Hickleton is living in Carlton Colville with wife Ann (? Marianne) age 55 (c1796) gives her pob as what has been recorded as Dennyton or Denngton, Norfolk.

By 1861 Ann is not with William but he still describes himself as married.

I can only find an Ann Hickleton on the 1861C born c 1796 Letton, Norfolk working as a nurse in Cambridge - she describes herself as a widow?  If Mary Ann Hickleton died in 1865 have you found her on the 1861C or is this her?

Trying to work this one back we have your couple Charles & Marianne Hickleton married 1818 in Carlton Colville & that is supported by the bpts you have & the submitted one I found for Frances in 1818 also Carlton Colville.

Diddy has come up with burials for the couple in Lowestoft in 1864 & 1865 but I have been unable to find them on the 1841/51/61CRs.  Thats why I was curious about William Hickleton & Ann.

There is one Charles HICKLETON c1806 living in Haddiscoe, NFK in 1841, with what could have been his brother & by 1851 he is still in Haddiscoe describes himself as married born c1801 but no sign of a wife & almost certainly too young to be your Charles.  It would be really helpful to find Charles & Marianne on a CR  - have you done that?

Hi,

We have a family link via the Howard's, my 2nd Great Grandfather Edward Howard is your Henry (Harry) Howard's brother, and I have recently helped a colleague at work with Henry (Harry) Howard who is his Great Grandfather.

I haven't started looking at the Hickleton side of the family for my colleague yet, other than Caroline's siblings.

But I have researched the Howard side back to pre 1733.
