Dumbleton Churchyard.
« on: Monday 19 March 12 19:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I have attached a photograph of myself sitting on the gate of Dumbleton churchyard.  I was off-sick from school with my asthma, and joined my parents and granny on a day trip here in about 1963 or thereabouts.  I have amassed a huge family tree going back to the 1500s in some branches, but have drawn a blank with the Dumbleton branch.  I was always told that Dumbleton churchyard was where all granny's relatives were buried.  Somewhere there was a vicar(s), and a headmaster, possibly at a school in Worcester.
Granny was Gladys Maud Stanley (1895), with a sister Hilda Stanley (1897), and a brother whom I think died in infancy, Wallace Stanley (1889).  Their parents were William Stanley and Emily nee Pritchard.  William died a young man and left Emily to raise the girls alone. I just can't seem to go any further back with this line, let alone find any clergy or headteachers.
Does anyone have any idea whether there is a list of those buried in Dumbleton churchyard?  Or have any idea of my family tree prior to the information I have?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Many thanks.

Hi WGHS,
Read your post with interest as I also have ancestors from Dumbleton, and I have visited the parish church of St Peter once searching for headstones.
Stanley is a common surname in the area and the National Burial Index (NBI) records 460 burials at St Peter 1813-1875, but no Stanleys. In fact I have a Stanley ancestor line back to Richard Stanley b.1813, Overbury, Worcs, the family settling in Broadway which is not very far away from Dumbleton. His son Thomas b.1846 married Emily Harvey, my 1st cousin 3 times removed.
Next time I'm in Glos Archives I'll have a look at the Dumbleton parish records for you and transcribe whatever Stanley entries I can find.

Gosh, you were quick!  I will work through those now and see where and if I can slot them into my family tree.  Thank you for sending me this information so quickly. I am wondering if William Frank Stanley is my great grandfather.........I think I might have the wrong William Stanley in my family tree at the moment.  At the time of the 1901 census he has already died, but his youngest daughter is 4, so he must have lived up until at least 4 y 9 months before that which would take him back to 1897, which is the year in your email.  However, these dates don't tie in with the information that was handed down to me, which was that "Emily Pritchard married William Stanley, a wheelwright, who by all accounts was a much liked, handsome young man.  Unfortunately at the age of 29 he developed pneumonia and died a week later.  This left Emily a widow with two very young daughters – Gladys 3 years old and Hilda 18 months old." This would have made William's death to be in about 1899 I think.  I'll keep trying to get to grips with it, and thank you for your help.  Oh - also in the same handwritten document was written: "Anne Pritchard had two daughters, Kate and Emily." ie Anne Pritchard would have been William Stanley's mother-in-law.

Hi WHGS,
Best of luck with the data. Something must fit?, unlike our interface. Nothing immediately springs to mind, but I have printed off your post and will have a closer look.
Meanwhile, if you would like any more Gloucestershire lookups, do ask.

Hello Victor, I still haven't managed to get any further with the Dumbleton Pritchards and Stanleys, despite your kind help.  I've subscribed yet again to Ancestry to see whether I can find anything futher and make connections that make sense, but I'm still hitting brick walls. I think the people I'm finding are Stanley and Pritchard cousins, because they don't tie in with the information I've had handed down to me. However, because I can't find my gggrandparents, I can't make connections between the stray Pritchards and Stanleys.  I also remember the fact that somewhere down the line there was a Headmaster of a school in Worcester and at least one vicar, in or near Dumbleton, possibly Worcester. All the other branches of my family tree of which I knew nothing, now go back a considerable distance, yet this branch which ought to have been the easiest, is proving the most evasive! Do you know of anywhere online where I can research long-past vicars and headmasters?  Clutching at straws here!

Hi,
Dumbleton is on the Gloucestershire/Worcestershire border and I know of no vicar/headmaster records.
I can check the Dumbleton Parish Records (PRs) for specific lookups if you wish, as they are available at Glos Archives (GA).
