Hello Eilleen :)

Has it been drained recently?  I can remember it being pretty empty in about 1969, but didn't realise you'd be wanting a photo.  ::)

That's an awful long time ago, isn't it?

Hi Geoff   :)

hope all is well with you  :)

I have scatty bits of imformation  ;D

1, that it was drained and used to store ammunition during 2nd world war  :o

2, that just after the war local lads used to make grappling irons and pull items out, one bloke who I spoke to got a machine gun  :o

3, in the 1960s  ???  it was completely drained to remove anything remaining .

this was when I hope some photo's were taken,  :)

The late 1960s was the time when they constructed or repaired the brick walls around the edge of the lake.  I'm sure there would have been army (or bomb disposal) personnel around if they were after finding old ammo - but I don't remember any.  :-\

I remember several yards of mud around the margins of the lake (it was never deep at the edges anyway).  There was obviously lots of water left in the middle or the fish would have all died.

One thing I do recall at that time was finding a bat hanging on the lake wall, in the corner near the dogs' graveyard (if you remember that). :)

  Dogs graveyard still there, :)

don't think the bat is  ;D

I also remember when they were repairing etc in the late 60s,  ::)

I believe it was an earlier draining, and defiantly to remove ammo etc, well that's what the older folk are saying . :)

but none of them seem to have been able to afford a camera.

I remember one bit where there were piles of sand near the house and you could find bullet heads there, they must have used it as a range, although perhaps stories suggested people had been executed there were somewhat exaggerated.  :o

I think at least two of the dogs' gravestones are in the visitor centre.  There used to be four - Hector, Pompey ..... it's a long time ago.
