Wow you're amazing Sandra, thank you! At least Rowland the father still had the middle name Hill. I guess Rose didn't like the name, a bit like my wife put her foot down with our son. I wanted to be Thomas Dowdeswell Pine (the 4th), but she refused. We settled on my father's name instead.  :)

Possibility for Rose - birth year slightly out  ??? Have you got an exact birth date for Rose ?

New York Passenger Lists shows Rowland Holloway. Born about 1890 Melbourne. Australia and aged 26 years. Single. Fireman.
Port of Departure: Montevideo to New York arriving 3 January 1916 on the Voltaire.
Looks like it departed 10 December 1915

Also see a Canadian Passenger List for Rowland Holloway. Born about 1891 Australia and aged 28 years. Travelling with Rose aged 23 years, born England. Both destined for Philadelphia on the Tunisian, arriving 10 June 1919.
Departure Liverpool to Quebec.

Yes, it appears he was a merchant seaman for a little while. I don't have a date of birth for Rose, other than approximations from the census records. Also I don't know if that was he arrived to stay in the US because  I found their marriage record in England in 1918.

Yes, have just come across the marriage record - if he was part of a ships crew, then he maybe wouldn't show entering the UK - haven't seen anything yet under Rowland or Roland.
