Need guidance finding burial - Nettleden/HH
« on: Thursday 22 March 12 19:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello from a newbie.  I am looking for my great-grandfather's burial site and could use some guidance how to go about it.  Frederick Lee lived in Nettleden and died in 1944.  From my online research I would guess he was buried at Heath Lane?  I cannot find a record of his burial online.  I will be visiting HH with my mother in July and if there is a grave marker, I would love to take her to the site.

TIA.

Hi

I'm no expert on Herts but I think Nettleden was in the Berkhamsted Registration District and his death was registered in Hemel Hempstead RD

Do you have a copy of his death cert showing exactly where he died?

Hi

(As you published his name, etc) FreeBMD carries the following death registration

Frederick LEE
1944, September quarter, Hemel Hempstead 3a 1205

If you are not already in possession of a copy of the death certificate, you could order one?

Regards
Ray

Thanks, Ray.  Would the death certificate show burial, though?

Hi

Just a step closer.
An address maybe on the certificate?

Why not also ask Nettleden's church
Vicarage
Pipers Hill
Great Gaddesden
HP1 3BY.
Telephone: 01442 214898

Hi

The death cert will not give any burial details.  It will show the address at which he died which will give some clue as to the likeliest burial place.  It will also show the details of the person who reported his death

I am just a bit bothered that he may have died in a different area given the registration district

Hi

Nettleden and Hemel Hempstead are very close together less than 5 miles apart so he could have died in hospital in Hemel Hempstead.
Nettleden parish registers are held at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.

Hertfordshire Family History Society have transcribed the monumental inscriptions for the churchyard

The local cemetery in Hemel Hempstead could also be a possibility - Heath Lane Cemetery managed by Dacorum Borough Council

Don't know how far you've managed to get but I did a quick check on Heath Lane Cemetery with Dacorum and was informed that nobody with Frederick Lee's name is buried in any of the 4 cemeteries they look after in 1944.

Also popped to St Lawrence's Church in Nettleden, couldn't get in but as they only have a few headstones still standing I had a quick look and found nothing with Frederick Lee's name on.  There is a note saying a book of rememberance is available to look at for those whose ashes were scattered at the Church.

Here's a link to Nettleden's Church: http://www.nettledenchurch.org.uk/ if you haven't already contacted them.

Thank you so much for looking!  Yes, I contacted Heath Lane and found the same thing.  Also I have contacted the minister at St. Lawrence church and he says he will show us the book when we are there.
