Scanner for Pre WW11 Black and White Negatives

I have found in my grandparents home hundreds of black and white negatives, neally all pre WW2 some are 3"'x 2'' and others 4" x 2 1/2 ".

I would like to scan them, put them on a disc and then print to ones that are in focus, or are photos of family, or of historical value to the family. There appears to be lots of photos of the ships in Sydney Harbour during WW2, and the Bridge being Built. I asked at the Camera shop and they wanted to charge me $2.00 for each photo, I would need to get a bank loan to cover what they wanted to charge.

My question is has anybody have any suggestion on what scanner I should purchase. When I ask they staff in Computor stores some look at me and think I am troppo, they want to sell me a scanner that will take 35mm, they look at me with a funny look when I talk about black and white negatives

One chap suggested a Canon 9000F. I use Windows 7.

Has a number of film and slide attachements. You should be able to get one in Australia. Very good, and works with Windows 7.

oooh, how exciting Cass! After you buy your scanner, please share some of the historical and interesting ones with us.  I'm sure there must be some equipment available that will do what you want. Have you tried a general google search?

I just googled negative film scanner old negatives. It might be wroth doing some research before you purchase, so you get something that gives you a good result.

I have a Optic Pro scanner that scans both pictures as well as negatives.
The negative side is just a plastic frame with apertures for the light to shine through onto the negative.
How adaptive are you?
I had a couple of larger negatives to scan, using some stiff card I cut out a hole big enough to hold the negative, then positioned the card onto the flat scanner bed.
(The art is getting the negative square on, and to hold the negative flat)
If you can do the above, why not try on a friends Windows 7 computer before purchasing a more modestly priced unit.

The Otek 3-in-1 only does 35mm transparencies?

The Microtek caters for transparencies 4.5cm (1.77") wide?

Try this I have seen posted elsewhere.

You need a digital camera, a piece of white paper, tape, etc

Put a piece of white paper on the OUTSIDE of a window, carefully attach your negative/slide on the INSIDE.

Set camera to no flash and macro/close up mode.

Go close to fill the frame with your negative/slide....... take picture


Load up to computer and change from negative to positive via software.

Have a look.

Might not be "excellent" but at least was free!

I use an Epson V500 Photo, which gives pretty good results on 35mm, and it will take larger formats 

It functions very well as a normal document scanner too
