Bates Family Sedgely/Lower Gornal

Hi...I am still trying to fill in all the gaps for my family. I was born at (what was) Rookery Farm, Lanesfield 1935 before it was compulsory purchased for development. My Family name is Bates ( maybe formerly Bate ?? ) and my grandfather James, owned the brickworks Ettingshall. I would welcome any info on the family and contact with anyone who can suggest pre 1900 searches. My ancestors are buried in the Congregational Church @ Ruiton.

Are you sure your grandfather's name was James and not John?
I reached this point by following your birth and parent's marriage back. Your father Robert R E Bates? Do I have the correct family?

This census says John born Wolverhampton and Clara born Sedgley but the enumerator could have got it mixed up.
All the children and Betsy born sedgley.

 did james change his name to John? More searching to be done.

This birth certificate is needed to determine his parent's names in view of the fact you gave your grandfather's name as James but working backwards from the address of the brickworks in your first post leads to a John Charles Bates.  Do you have your parent's marriage cert?

Hi Crisane...Thanks so much for the very prompt replies which I am taking time to desseminate. Yes, Im absolutely sure of my facts re John Charles BATES as my g'father. I mistakenly called him James, my g'g/father.  My father was Robert Richard Edward (1902) and I used to live on a small farm at the top of Bate Street , Lanesfield . It will take me some time to go thriugh the rest of your list. Thanks.

To take this back further with certainty that you are following the correct family I think you should purchase the birth cert for John Charles.  it will give you his father's name, mother's maiden name and their address.
