murray gillespie family
« on: Friday 30 March 12 03:37 BST (UK) »
found details of a marriage in ontario between a david loney with mother agnes gillespie and father thomas loney from scotland. david married helen murray who's father is shown as hugh murray and i have a slight issue with whom is shown as mother as says isabella dempsie. the issue i think is it probably should show as gillespie as we are related to some family by this name i believe. specifically an agnes murray gillespie who i presume would be related to isabella in some way,but don't know how.the marriage is on 31st august 1925 and shown as marriage county or district as essex(presumably essex, canada) in Ontario.David's dob is given as about 1899.can anyone confirm if dempsie is gillespie misspelt.?

I have followed David Loney through the Scotland censuses with father Thomas and mother Agnes. I can't see a marriage for Thomas and Agnes but there is an Agnes Gillespie born 1860 which fits so it looks as if the marriage entries for david Loney and Helen Murray have the correct parents.

The birth registration for Helen Murray on Scotlandspeople would have the mother's name.  Scotlandspeople is a pay site but quite reasonable in my opinion.

I'm directly related to Thomas and Agnes so that's no problem it's the link with the Murray Gillespie's I'm trying to find as Found somone with Murray as a surname and know they are related to the Gillespie's but someone I think in Canada may be a "Murray Gillespie" hence thought the Dempsie was spelt wrong or one of Helen's Family must be a "Murray Gillespie" somwhere. Trying to find if related to Agnes Murray Gillespie.

Have you looked at the passenger list for Helen Murray's emigration to Canada?

She sailed from Glasgow to Montreal aboard the Metagama arriving August 8, 1925.  She states that her passage was paid by her cousin and her contact in Canada was her cousin, Mr. D. Loney, 295 Monmouth Rd., Apt. 9, Walkerville, Windsor, Ontario.  Her contact in the UK is listed as her brother, Wm. D. Murray, 7 Herbertshire St., Stirling.

I think you'll need to do some research back in Helen's family to find the connection.

Agnes is born 24 June 1857 and marriage is 1877. However do think the spelling on the ontario marriage is wrong possibly but can't prove it.

Not sure what you're referring to as misspelt - are you still thinking the mother of Helen should be Gillespie rather than Dempsie?

Catholic records are usually pretty good at keeping track of parentage.
Helen shows her birthplace as Lennoxtown in this record

1881 Scottish census there is a Hugh Murray b. 1858 Lennoxtown Stirlingshire in household of mother Margaret
1883 marriage on Scotland's People between Hugh Murray and Isabella Dempsie in Campsie, Stirlingshire
1891 Scottish census in Campsie Hugh and Isabella's birthplace is given as Lotown, Stirlingshire
1901 Scottish census under MURRY Hugh and Isabella in Campsie, Stirlingshire with their birthplaces given as such as are all the children.  Children are:
Mary 16, James 11, William 10, Michael 7, Isabella 4, Helen 1.  also in household are Cornelius Friel 17 and Mary Dempsie 13.

From this I would assume that Lennoxtown is part of the Campsie registration district in Scotland.  If you're still wondering about Helen's parentage you could spend a few dollars and buy some credits and verify same.  I would think that the Catholic record is accurate and her mother is Isabella Dempsie.
