"completed"Milnthrope Workhouse
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 14:39 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandfather Jonathan TITTERINGTON was buried in Beetham on the 11 October 1856

I have visited the cemetery but doesn't appear to be a headstone. Since my visit I have discovered his brother Anthony TITTERINGTON was buried in Beetham on the 1 November 1856. They may have been buried together.

However, the death address for Anthony is - Milnthorpe Workhouse (unmarried). Would there be records for Workhouse in 1856.

Can anyone help with this, please.

Hi,

Just checked on www.workhouses.org and there don't seem to be many records listed.  Only birth registers for Milnthorpe.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Kendal/

Might be worth emailing the Cumbria Archive Centre at Kendal to see what they have though.

I didn't think there would be any records. Thought they might have been able to tell me where in Beetham he is buried. Having died in Milnthrope workhouse, he probably won't have a headstone. Just curious to know if Jonathan and Anthony were buried together, being buried just about 3 weeks apart.

Had a look at the Cumbria Archive Centre in Kendal: Their Deaths register (1836-48, 1914-38) Doesn't include 1865. Will e-mail Cumbria Archive Centre.

Thank you.

I have been on BMD's and found details on Jonathan TITTERINGTON and Anthony TITTERINGTON.

Jonathan - Kendal  Vol 10b  Page 337
Anthony  - Kendal  Vol 10b  Page 423

Does this mean there are death certificates?

Yes those are both entries from the GRO index of deaths. Ypu can order copies of the death certificates. The certificate will give the date, place and cause of death and who registered the death.

Gibel,

Thank you. Now I just need to where they were buried in Beetham churchyard, as there is unlikely to be headstone.

If there is a grave plan it is likely to be in the possession of the church still especially if the graveyard is still open for burials.

I contacted the minister of Beetham Curch. He couldn't be of assistance because their oldest burial register starts  in 1892. Earlier registers are held at Kendal. So, I have e-mailed Kendal Record office to see if they can help.

Thanks once again.

The grave register is not the same as the burial register.

The grave register if it exists just states who is in which grave etc and may have numbers that relatye to a plan.

The burial register gives the date of burial along with the person's name age etc. It does not give grave numbers etc

If there is no gravestone it is generally very difficult to identify where someone is buried in a churchyard.
