MACKINNON Ian Malcolm (where & when did he die?)
« on: Wednesday 04 April 12 03:23 BST (UK) »
This is probably a very long shot but I am trying to find (a) the death of Ian Malcolm MACKINNON. He is on my family tree but the known facts about him are few.

He was born in Vancouver B.C. in 1904; parents John McLellan Mackinnon and Jean Macgregor Mackinnon nee Grant.

(Siblings:Isabella Mary MACKINNON and Charles Donald Grant MACKINNON.)
Married Clara Pauline French in 1932 in Victoria, B.C.

There is an entry in the London Gazette which possibly refers to "my" man-

Wing Commander Ian Malcolm Mackinnon, (.1888 [airforce number?]), Royal Canadian Airforce.

I think Ian Malcolm MACKINNON may have gone to live in a province other than B.C.
(b) Find any descendants. (Advise by PM).

Grateful for any help on this one.

There is a public tree on ancestry which has an Ian Malcolm Mackinnon but born 1921 and married Marguerite Ramsay.
I mention this because there is a photo of him in uniform which may be relevant to the article in the London Gazette

The only other reference to an Ian Malcolm Mackinnon I found is in Australia where he married a Beatrice May Scott in Sydney in 1942 and is on the electoral rolls up until 1980 - non available after that and no death records available online after 1981 so the idea of finding this one's NSW death record, which gives parents names, was skittled.

Thanks for your response Crisane.

I'm sure Ian Malcolm Mackinnon remained in Canada, just don't know which province. He was definitely born in 1904.

The Gazette notice may refer to the man you found born in 1921 so more evidence will be required to prove whether my man or not.

However, new information has just come to hand!!
In 1978, Ian Malcolm MACKINNON was said to be retired and living in Stroud, ONTARIO.

Rootschatters, I hope this helps???

 - there is some information about his WWII service here, search under RCAF Personnel Awards 1939-1949.
His home was in Vancouver when he enlisted and he was living in Victoria in 1949.

Hi Jorose,

The information on that website looks to be very much like "my" man, thank you.  :)

Now I have my fingers crossed that someone can bring his history a little further on.

Hi there,

You could try 'ask a librarian' at this link to the Stroud Public Library. This website page also indicates the branch holds a Local History Collection. The Librarian may have other suggestions.

 http://www.innisfil.library.on.ca/stroud-branch

There is also probably a branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in the area; it would be related to the county that Stroud is in ... a google search should help with that.

We search for information but it is up to the thread owner to verify that it is correct.

Thank you for your message Polarbear. All suggestions gratefully received.  :)

I will contact the library and also see if I find the genealogy society. Definitely worth a try.
