Herdman Mystery
« on: Wednesday 04 April 12 13:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for help in locating a Robert Herdman born around 1876 possibly in Bishop Auckland.

He married an Elizabeth Linton in Sunderland during the December quarter of 1901 and, by 1911 they can be found living apart (although both say they are still 'married.'

Robert is living in Collin Place, Southwick with two of his children (year of birth 1876 - Bishop Auckland). His children were Florence (born Isabella Florence), and James, (born James Foster Linton).

His wife is also living in Southwick as a housekeeper (Elizabeth Linton year of birth 1884 - Sunderland), with a son, Alfred B).

Elizabeth can be found in 1891 with her father, James Foster Linton, (born 1861 in Lincoln), in Sunderland, as Eliza Linton.

There is no trace of her or her family in 1901!

However, no trace at all of Robert prior to 1911. I did think he may have been the Robert Herdman born Sunderland around 1881, father Nicholas Herdman, but registrars have confirmed that it is not.

There are two more Herdman/Linton births after 1911 - Frances in 1917, and Catherine, birth registered during the Jan quarter of 1919.

On Catherine's marriage certificate her father's details are blank!!

Could the pair have separated just prior to 1911 or could Robert have been killed in WW1?

Can anybody find him 1881, 1891 or 1901??

Thanks Sue

Interestingly there is a discrepancy between what Elizabeth and Robert say about the children of the marriage.

That may be Stan, but Robert can't count!!
4+2+2 should equal 8? ;D

Would you like to re examine that Kevin  -  I think it might well be   4 = 2 + 2

On the 1881 census there is a Robert Hirdman b.1875, Etherley, living in Bishop Auckland who might be a likely candidate.

I'd have been faster if I'd not checked all the spellings  and Kevin's arithmetic  ;D

Baptism details from Family search -

Robert Herdman
26 May 1875, Etherley, Durham, England
Father - John Herdman
Mother - Mary

This looks like the Robert from the 1881 census as 'Hirdman'
