RANKIN in Rayne
« on: Wednesday 04 April 12 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone might help me find the marriage of John RANKIN to Lydia N/K.

John was born c. 1789 in Braintree.  Lydia was born c. 1789 - 92 in Stocking or Furneux Pelham (Herts).  Their children, baptised in Rayne, were: Emma 1822, Thomas 1826, Lydia 1828, Mary 1830, Abigail 1832 and Frederick 1835.  On 1841/51/61 Censuses the family was living at King's Farm, Rayne.

John died 1870 and Lydia 1872.

Any information greatly appreciated!  (I've searched in vain).

Melbell.

All Saints, Rayne

John Ramkin,widower
Lydia Chatters, widow
both of the parish
by banns
21st June, 1824
witnesses
Dan Rankin
Mary Ramkin

Dan was the only one what signed, the others made their mark, so would imagine Ramkin was the vicars way of spelling it.

suffolk*sue and Willsy

Many thanks for the extra information.  I found the Chatters/Chaters marriage on FamilySearch yesterday but it's great to have it confirmed from the register.  It must mean that John married his sister-in-law (Lydia).  I've searched about online but cannot find a marriage of a Lydia to a man called Chatters/Chaters, either in Essex or Herts. (where she was born).

Baptism of Emma RANKIN
« Reply #7 on: Tuesday 10 April 12 17:21 BST (UK) »
I had always thought that Emma was the child of John and Lydia Rankin but in view of the above information I think it more likely that she was born to John and his first wife Rachel nee Chatters.

She was born c. 1822/3 in either Rayne or Bocking (according to census returns); or perhaps in Braintree?   Can anyone give me any details please?  And perhaps any sibling baptisms too?

Ta!

Melbell.
