Inter-family adoption - Where in the tree?
« on: Tuesday 17 May 05 18:50 BST (UK) »
Dear all,
I alluded to this in another post but thought I would raise it as a subject in it's own right.

I was adopted by my birth mother's cousin.  Now, that isnt the problem.  My confusion is 'where do I put myself in the tree'?  Obviously, under my Mum & Dad but do I put a little addendum on my birth mother's bit? At least with the same great-grandparents on one side, its one less branch!

Your advice as Im new to all this...

and on and on and on.......

My Dad was illegitimate and was brought up by his mothers Aunt.  Even though his mother married and set up home at the other end of the Country and was never heard of again, I have entered him on the tree as her son but with his 'adopted' surname.  His notes make interesting reading!

It does seem to confuse the software though (I'm using Family Tree Maker), if I print a chart we seem to be detached (I assume because there is no 'father' link) but the genealogy text reports seem to be OK.

I only ask so that my descendants dont have to go through all the rigmarole that I do now!  Saving my ggggggt grandchildren an awful lot of hassle!!! (she says optimistically, hoping that her children will leave home soon and have families of their own ::))
