i checked FindMyPast and can't see an emigration. have you tried searching under Edith Mary carter rather than John?  if for any reason theres a problem with Johns transcription.

i had major problems searching for a relative but eventually found him - first name benjamin transcribed as Benigham!!

Hi,

The 1911 census was taken on Sunday 02 April 1911. This would be before John and Edith's marriage which was on the 20 April 1911,

Marriage
20 Apr 1911, Seacroft, St James
John Dunwell CARTER    25        Bachelor    Farmer
Residence at time of marriage:  Providence Farm Whinmoor
Father:  John William CARTER,  Farmer
Edith Mary SCOTT    27    Spinster
Residence at time of marriage:  Hobberly Cottage, Shadwell
Father: George Thomas SCOTT, Blacksmith.
Witnesses:  J W SCOTT,  D I SCOTT,  S A CARTER

Before the marriage I think Edith Mary SCOTT can be found living with her family and John Dunwell CARTER is with his family (transcribed as CASTER at Ancestry but CARTER at FindMyPast), both in the parish of  Barwick in Elmet.

It looks like they might have had twins who died almost straight away, how sad.

Births
Dunwell S CARTER    Mar Q 1912    Tadcaster    9c  2105
mmn: Scott

Dorothy M CARTER    Mar Q 1912    Tadcaster    9c  2105
mmn: Scott

Deaths
Dunwell S CARTER    Mar Q 1912    9c  1136
Age at Death: 0

Dorothy M CARTER    Mar Q 1912    9c  1136
Age at Death: 0

Burials
25 Jan 1912
Parish: St James,Seacroft

Dunwell Scott CARTER
Age: 3 Days

Dorothy Margaret CARTER
Age: 3 Days

Abode:  White Leigh Farm, Winmoor

Possible deaths for John and Edith, the ages match but the names are quite common :-\

John D CARTER    Dec Q 1961    Barkston Ash    2d  511
Age:  76

Edith M CARTER    Mar Q 1968    Leeds    2c  312
Age:  84

Tadcaster was changed to Barkston Ash in 1947

Thank you Diddymiller and Daisypetal for your help, its looking more and more like my father is the last in the Carter line, feel quite sad, I was hoping to find the Carter line still going strong.

Thank you again

Hi,

Although not your direct line, how about brothers of John Dunwell CARTER, they might have carried the CARTER name forward  :-\

Hi Joanne,

My grandad William Dunwell Carter farmed Providence Farm up to 1969. I suspect John Dunwell Carter may have been his grandfather. I can put you in touch with my Dad if you would like to chase this up.

Regards,

Stephen
