Nearest that I can find for William in 1901 is:

Midfield, Marnoch
Alexander Inglis, ?, farmer, b. Forgue, Abn
Elizabeth, wife,?,  b. Marnoch
Jessie, daur, 22, general servant, b. Marnoch
Alexander Christie, grdson, 6, b. Marnoch
William Christie, grdson 4, b. Marnoch

(Marnoch = Aberchirder)

gnu

Note - 1891 census has Alexander and Elizabeth as b. c. 1838 - aged 53, so 63 on the 1901.

The nearest birth registrations for William and Ann in  Marnoch are:

1896 William Christie
1901 Hannah Henry Christie
also
1895 Alexander Inglis Christie

Note that the Duffus family might have taken the children in as boarders for payment by the parish if their parents were dead or  :-\  They might not have been related.

(Marnoch = Aberchirder)

Sorry, but that isn't quite right.

Aberchirder (also known as Foggie or Foggieloan) is the largest village in the parish of Marnoch, but there are many farms and hamlets in the parish of Marnoch that are not in the village of Aberchirder.

See http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Marnoch/locations.html for a list of place names in the parish of Marnoch.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I'm quite aware of that  ::)

I think you might have misunderstood my shorthand - it relates to the census info in Reply  #1 compared with  #3 On the 1911 their birthplace was given as Aberchirder and in the 1901 it was given as Marnoch. I was merely suggesting that it was given as an equivalent in this case.
