This link explains it all

http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=genealogy&cdn=parenting&tm=82&gps=425_8_1024_602&f=00&su=p284.13.342.ip_p504.6.342.ip_&tt=11&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp%3Fa%3D168%26Q%3D229939

NB: records are not available to everyone - you have to explain who you are and why you should have it.

If the link doesn't work do a search on Pennysvania Vital Records - Death
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Please keep in mind that the link above only applies if the person died in Pennsylvania.  The Social Security Death Index does not indicate where the person died.  If she died in a different state, then you would have to apply to them.  Her place of last residence is rather close to New Jersey & Delaware.

Thank you, we have a letter that Kate wrote to her nephew at the start of WW2 and her address then was Ardmore, Delaware.

Yes, but she could have died in a nursing home or hospital elsewhere, whilst on holiday, in a car acccident, etc. "Last residence & benefit" means her last address & social security payment were for Ardmore.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks, so is there no way of finding where the death was registered.

You could try to get an obituary for her, which might mention where she died.

The letter Kate sent to her nephew James in 1939 she talks about James's cousins and we have no idea who these cousins are so we have decided to try to get the death cert to see if this will throw any light at all on who these cousins are.  What info does a US death cert give?

Where would I look for an obituary?
