« on: Thursday 12 April 12 21:57 BST (UK) »
I am interested in the family of Mary Stanger who married Wilfred Grisdale of Matterdale in Crosthwaite in 1702. Does anyone know about her family.

Please see my blog on Wilfred: http://grisdalefamily.wordpress.com/2012/04/12/wilfred-grisdale-1675-1732-the-matterdale-brewer-who-became-a-lord-of-the-manor/

Hi

I'm not sure what you know about the family before Mary, if very little, there are a few Stangers in Crosthwaite going back to 1564, at least.

IGI (Extracted Records):
5 Mar 1676 Mary Stanger d. of James Stanger & Jannett, Crosthwaite, bap.
15 Oct 1676 James Stanger & Jannett Thompson, Thelkeld, mar.
Not quite sure how the dates work out though, maybe wrong couple or daughter! Unless they married after Mary was born??

14 Feb 1644 Jaymes Stanger s. of Jaymes Stanger & Marye, Woodend, Crosthwaite, bap. Marye/Mary may be a Calvert.

8 Feb 1564 Thomas Stangher & Agnette, Crosthwaite, mar. Interesting Stanger name variant.

Sadly, I've not learnt about your Wilfred & Mary's wealth as yet!

Hope there is something to help.

Regards
Geoff

Thanks for that Geoff, I had spotted this family and think it's the one. Also there are Stangers in the same parish in London around the time Wilfred Grisdale was a Brewer there. So that's worth pursuing, though it may be a coincidence.

Re Wilfred's wealth. I have discovered that on the 1702 Carlisle record of his marriage to Mary he is already listed as a Gent of the City of London, so obviously he had made his wealth early in life and before his marriage!
