I've just inherited the family bible and found out I have 19th Century Irish ancestors - the DOHERTY family of Carrick on Shannon, County Leitrim & Battlebridge, County Roscommon.

John Doherty was born on 24th June 1834 - son of William and Catherine. He married Anne Maynes on 23rd July 1860 at a church in Battlebridge, Roscommon - the writing in the bible looks like the name of the church begins with an 'F' perhaps Forma? Can anyone help identify the name of the church please.

Anne Maynes was born in November (?) 1841 and was the daughter of Hugh & Alice Maynes. Between them John & Anne had 12 children - one of whom was my Great-Grandmother.

one way to sort it out would be to order a marriage cert... here are the likely references from the BMD Index :

  Name:   Anne Maynes
  Registration district:   Carrick On Shannon
  Event type: Marriage
  Year: 1860
  Volume: 3 / Page : 282

There's a matching entry for a John Doherty.

Carrick on Shannon town is split between two Civil parishes - Kiltoghert and Killukin

Battlebridge town is in the Civil Parish of Tumna. (Church of Ireland parishes usually follow the same boundaries)

see : Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon

Here's the Church of Ireland parish church at Tumna - short distance south west of Battlebridge town.

  Tumna Church (OSI Map, c1890)

Thanks Shane. Looking at the inscription again I agree that Tumna Church seems to fit. Thanks too for the MBD entry lead. I'll follow that up and they had 12 children between them, so I'll have plenty to keep me going for a while.

Many thanks again
 :)

Thanks for the photos. That's amazing but poignant too - such a shame it's derelict as it looks like a lovely building. Thanks again.

Hi Janet,
Thank you for this post. I descend from Martha Ann Doherty (1872-1954) of the John Doherty and Ann Maynes brood of twelve. Your post adds another tidbit and further confirms information on John and the Dohertys collected to date.  :)
